Torito Tapas

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

Tonight I was graced with the lovely arrival of my sister in Toronto. I had planned on taking her out for a meal downtown, but she ended up having some pasta at my work - she hadn't eaten the entire five hour flight from Vancouver to Toronto! After we dropped her stuff off at my apartment, we pondered where we should go for a late dinner. She was still hungry, but not for a huge meal since the fettuccine she ate filled her up a decent amount. I had heard a few people mention a tapas bar in Kensington Market recently, and I realized that munching on a few share plates would be perfect for the evening.

I love the mix of bright red colouring and candle lit tables that can be found at Torito. The waitstaff was friendly and like many restaurants throughout the market, there was quite a homey, comfortable atmosphere. They mixed up our first dish, but let us keep the olives they accidentally placed at our table. At the moment the only animal products I have been eating have been a bit of seafood and I'm still off sugar; however, I was still left with plenty of items on the menu to try.

Including the olives we tried six different tapas. I enjoyed them all, and my only complaint was that I wish that the scallops tapas was a bigger portion (you only get two). Torito is definitely ideal if you want to have a casual drink while snacking with friends. I also think it would make a laid back  yet romantic dinner spot. The dishes we're what you would expect for tapas size plates, and range from $8-14. It's definitely affordable while giving you the opportunity to try a variety of things.

Shrimps al Ajillo

Wild Mushrooms with White Wine Butter Sauce

Seared Scallops

White Bass Ceviche with Corn, Fresh Chili Peppers and Cilantro

We also ordered the avocado fries with roasted tomato salsa but we were so hungry we scarfed most of them down before I realized I hadn't taken a picture.

Torito was a wonderful start to my Toronto adventures with my sister.

Get your stomachs ready readers - May is going to be the most delicious of months!

A Week of Mantras Inspired by Songs from Musicals

Sunday, March 9, 2014

I have a book of full of mantras for every day of the year that I try to read every morning. While I was on a run the other day, I got a sudden burst of motivation from my "Inner Rachel Berry" playlist (yes, I do make cheesy titles for all of my playlists), and it reminded me that those mantras and little bits of inspiration can be found almost anywhere throughout the day. In high school I was obsessed with musicals. Though I've still listened to my favourite soundtracks over the past few years, it wasn't until this weekend that I was reminded just how good some of those songs made me feel. After several musical dance parties within the past 48 hours, I can confidently say that upbeat showtunes are my foolproof way to brighten up my day and provide myself with bursts of energy. I understand that not everybody is into musicals, but if you're open to exploring that world then hopefully you can draw some meaningful messages and inspiration from the following list.

I made this list with a song and message for each day of the week. Read it all at once, or come back and play the songs on the days that you want a message to carry around and pass along. If you like the idea let me know and I will make this a regular part of my blog with different genres and themes each time I do so.

Monday

Mantra - No day but today

I've talked about my love for the book The Power of Now on here before. This song embodies some of the main themes that can be found throughout that book. Living in the moment, being fearless and being grateful for the current novelties in your life are little things that make a big difference throughout your day.

There is no future, there is no past. I live this moment as my last.

Tuesday

Mantra and Song - You're Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile from Annie

No matter how many bracelets or jewels you incorporate into your outfits, the only accessory that really matters is your smile. A genuine smile has the power to light up a room even more so than a Neil Lane necklace. Smiling is one of the easiest ways to brighten the lives of others, and everyone has the ability to do so. The question isn't why don't you smile, it's why wouldn't you want to smile?

It's what you wear from ear to ear

And not from head to toe that matters

Wednesday

Mantra - We can't win if we don't follow through

Chip On My Shoulder from Legally Blonde - The Musical

This song is all about the importance of working hard in order to succeed. For those of you who are familiar with Legally Blonde but not the musical, picture this song playing right after Elle leaves that Harvard party in her Playboy bunny costume. It's symbolic of the transitions and the challenges we must overcome before we get to the finish line.

There's a chip on my shoulder

And it's big as a boulder

With the chance I've been given,

I'm gonna be driven as hell.

I'm so close I can taste it,
So I'm not gonna waste it!
Yeah, there's a chip on my shoulder,
You might wanna get one as well.

Thursday

Mantra - Nobody told you the best way to steer when the wind starts to blow

The New World from Songs for a New World

One of my friends in high school introduced me to this song, and a group of us ended up singing it at our graduation. To me it symbolizes stepping out of your comfort zone and entering the unknown. Since many of my friends are going to be graduating from university this year, I thought the messages in this song were especially relevant and important. The "real world", as we sometimes call it, is something to be excited about instead of being afraid. It will be full of things that are new, suprising, challenging, different - and this song explains it all.

And you're suddenly a stranger

In some completely different land

And you thought you knew
But you didn't have a clue
That the surface sometimes cracks
To reveal the tracks
To a new world

Friday

Mantra and Song - Without Love from Hairspray

This song actually makes me want to give hugs to everyone I'm around. It's full of funny comparisons of what life would be like without love, and simply put, it basically says that kind of life would suck. No matter how many times I hear it, I can't help but jump around and sing along.

Like a week that's only Mondays

Only ice cream, never sundaes

Like a circle with no center

Like a door marked "do not enter!"

Darlin' I'll be yours forever
'Cause I never wanna be
Without love

Saturday

Mantra - Measure your life in love

Seasons of Love from Rent

I contemplated whether or not I should put two Rent songs in the same list. I also contemplated whether or not I should put two mantras about the importance of love back to back. But who am I kidding? The theme of my blog is all about spreading love, and this song fits it perfectly. It would be going against my instincts to exclude it from this post. I know most people have heard this song hundreds of times, but I think this is one with a message that never gets old.

It's time now, to sing out

Though the story never ends

Let's celebrate

Remember a year in the life of friends

Sunday

Mantra and Song - For Good from Wicked

*Spoiler Alert*

This isn't the best quality, but I prefer to post the scenes from the actual show for context. This is the final number from Wicked. The song itself begins around 2:40.

Whether it's a good or a bad effect, though in this case good, people who enter our lives have the ability to shape them and the paths we take. This song reminds me of the people who have come and gone in my life throughout the years. Even if things ended badly, it's important to know that you can always learn something from those situations. Did someone treat you poorly? If so, it probably taught you how not to treat people, and made you more conscious about being respectful and kind towards others. Think about the people in your life, and how your life would be different without them. Cherish them all, good and bad, for they all had some part in shaping the person you are today.

The following verse never fails to give me the feels...

It well may be that we will never meet again

In this lifetime
So let me say before we part

So much of me

Is made of what I learned from you

You'll be with me

Like a handprint on my heart

And now whatever way our stories end

I know you have re-written mine

By being my friend

I hope some of these songs helped brighten your week and made you think about things you wouldn't have thought about otherwise :)

With love,

Ciara <3

fly

Saturday, February 22, 2014

Lately I've found myself doing every Buzzfeed quiz that comes my way. Though I do think the way these quizzes decide which Spice Girl you are or which city you should live in is ridiculous, I do believe the answers you choose can say a lot about your personality. Sometimes, one of the questions is "If you could have a super power what would it be?" If flying is an option, I pick it without any hesitation. Being that I hate going on airplanes, this may seem a bit odd. What I like about the idea of flight; however, is the ability to be open and free amongst the unknown. I've always considered myself a very open minded person, and I think that ties into my infatuation with flying.

Flying doesn't have to be restricted to a fictional power found in fairytales and comic books. It is something we can aspire to in our minds and in our hearts. To open your heart and to open your mind is just like opening your wings to soar throughout the sky. To be open is to be living an adventure. Taking risks and making the impossible possible - that's what flying is to me.
Being the musical obsessed geek that I am, I naturally just assume that everyone has heard of the Broadway hit "Wicked." Last week I was shocked to find out that some friends of mine didn't know what I was talking about when I name dropped Idina Menzel and "Defying Gravity." I know many people reading this probably are familiar with it, but for those of you who aren't, the musical is essentially a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. It tells the backstories of Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, hence the title of the show. The song "Defying Gravity" talks about how Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) wants to live life without limitations. I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it, but I will leave you with the song.

In my mind, defying gravity is stepping outside of your comfort zone or social restraints. It's trusting your intuitions and making the decisions that are best for you. If you listen to the lyrics, you'll find that they match those same ideas. I think it's easy to become trapped inside of a bubble or social circle without realizing how narrow our thoughts and lives have become. Every so often I think it's important to take a step back, get out of that bubble, and to open our hearts to something new.

spread the love

Friday, February 14, 2014

Over the past few years my thoughts on Valentine's Day have changed. If you look back to my high school Facebook feed, you'll find several years of "Happy Single's Awareness Day" statuses. And my days went something like this...
  •

Or this...

Nowadays, I like to think of Valentine's Day not as a holiday to celebrate romance, but as a holiday to celebrate love. I know I've been absent from my blog lately; however, I knew I couldn't let Valentine's pass without posting on one of the main themes I aim to project on here: spreading love. Whether you're single or in a relationship, Valentine's Day can absolutely be used as an excuse to do something nice for someone else (not that you necessarily need a reason to do so.) If your schedule is even half as busy as mine is though, you know that it can be hard to fit in grand gestures on a daily basis.

I've been seeing people post videos of Nek nominations on Facebook. If you haven't heard of Nek nominations, they're basically a beer chugging dare that gets passed along from friend to friend. To be honest I think the idea is a little stupid. What I don't think is stupid are the people who have turned their Nek nominations into "RAK" nominations: random acts of kindness. It's as if little Haley Joel Osment's dreams from Pay it Forward are finally coming true.

If people could do the same thing to Valentine's Day that some people did to the Nek nominations, I think there would be a lot less lonely souls out there on the 14th of February. From giving cards out to friends again, to giving a rose to a homeless person, there are so many little things you can do that will make a big difference to someone else's heart.

I know the video below is romance oriented, but it's something I always like to share on Valentine's Day.

So whether you're in love or vying for love, there's no reason why you can't use today as an excuse to spread a little love. Buy someone a drink. Bake. Compliment a stranger. Draw somebody a picture. Anything you are able to do is enough.
If we all pass along some love, then it's only so much more likely that it will come back our way in the future.

Happy Valentine's Day!

With love,
Ciara <3

15 Inspirational Quotes from One Tree Hill

Thursday, January 16, 2014

When I was younger I remember keeping journals full of my favourite quotes from books, movies and TV shows. Eventually I got a laptop, and my handwritten journals were soon replaced by electronic file folders and documents. Sure, it's convenient to be able to pin over 20 of your favourite quotes in mere minutes, but there's something special about having a book to carry them around in. Ever since I saw "A Walk to Remember," I always pictured myself making a book full of quotes like Mandy Moore's character did. Maybe it would be to pass along to someone special who I felt needed the words more than I did. Maybe it would just be for myself. The point would be to have something to flip open that was guaranteed to make me laugh or feel inspired on days when I was feeling down or uneasy. With so many parts of our world becoming digital, it's nice to have some things kept old fashioned. At my last apartment I had quotes written on my glass mirrors, and painted onto my desk. Most of those quotes were from the show One Tree Hill. The quotes and voiceovers were some of the main reasons I fell in love with the series. So realistic and full of motivation, if you were to hear them out of context you wouldn't think most of them came from a teen drama series. A couple months ago I remember finding a post on Thought Catalog on some of the best quotes from One Tree Hill. Though the post contained some of the quotes I knew and love, I was shocked to find many of my favourite voiceovers from the show missing from the list. Over half of the quotes I've included weren't incorporated to the post I found on Thought Catalog, so I thought it was about time I made my own. I hope these words bring you the same inspiration and motivation that they did to me.

1.
"Take a look at yourself in the mirror, who do you see looking back? Is it the person you wanna be? Or is there someone else you were meant to be? The person you should have been, but fell short of. Is someone telling you you can't, or you wont? Because you can. Believe that love is out there. Believe that dreams come true every day, because they do. Sometimes happieness doesn't come from money, or fame, or power. Sometimes happiness comes from good friends and family, and from the quiet nobility of leading a good life. Believe that dreams come true everyday, because they do. Believe that dreams come true everyday, because they do. So take a look in that mirror and remind yourself to be happy, because you deserve to be. Believe that. And believe that dreams come true everyday, because they do."

2.
"Make a wish and place it in your heart. Anything you want, everything you want. Do you have it? Good. Now believe it can come true. You never know where the next miracle is going to come from. The next smile, the next wish come true. But if you believe that it's right around the corner, and you open up your heart and mind to the possibility of it, to the certainty of it, you just might get the thing you're wishing for. The world is full of magic. You just have to believe in it. So make your wish. Do you have it? Good. Now believe in it, with all of your heart."

3.
"George Bernard Shaw once wrote: "There are two tragedies in life. One is to lose your heart's desire. The other is to gain it." Clearly, Shaw had his heart broken once or twice.
As far as I'm concerned, Shaw was a punk. Cause you know what? Tragedies happen. What are you gonna do, give up? Quit? No. I realize now that when your heart breaks, you got to fight like hell to make sure your still alive. Because you are. And that pain you feel? That's life. The confusion and fear? That's there to remind you, that somewhere out there is something better, and that something is worth fighting for.
This year, I got everything I wanted and everything I wished for. But in a way, I lost even more.
Shaw was right. As we strain to grasp the things we desire, the things we think will make our lives better: money, popularity, fame... we ignore what truly matters, the simple things, like friendship, family, love. The things we probably already had.
So Mr. Shaw thinks that getting your heart's desire is a tragedy? I say he's wrong. I mean, clearly Shaw never kissed Erica Marsh.
Yes, losing your heart's desire is tragic. But gaining your heart's desire? That's all you can hope for. This year I wished for love... to immerse myself in someone else and to wake a heart long afraid to feel. My wish was granted. And if having that is tragic, then give me tragedy. Because I wouldn't give it back for the world."

4.
"And Hansel said to Gretal: Let us drop these bread crumbs, so that together we find our way home, because losing our way would be the most cruel of things." This year I lost my way. And losing your way on a journey is unfortunate. But losing your reason for the journey... is a fate more cruel. The journey lasted eight months. Sometimes I traveled alone. Sometimes there were others who took the wheel, and took my heart. But when the destination was reached, it wasn't me who'd arrived. It wasn't me at all. And once you lose yourself, you have two choices. Find the person you used to be, or lose that person completely. Because sometimes, you have to step outside of the person you've been, and remember the person you were meant to be. The person you wanted to be. The person you are."

5.
"At this moment, there are 6,470,818,671 people in the world. Some are running scared. Some are coming home. Some tell lies to make it through the day. Others are just now facing the truth. Some are evil men, that war with good. And some are good, struggling with evil. 6 billion people in the world. 6 billion souls. And sometimes, all you need is one."

6.
"Don't be afraid, Peyton. Every song has a coda, a final movement. Whether it fades out or crashes away, every song ends. Is that any reason not to enjoy the music?"

7.
"Albert Camus once wrote "Blessed are the hearts that can bend; they shall never be broken." But I wonder if there's no breaking then there's no healing, and if there's no healing then there's no learning. And if there's no learning then there's no struggle. But struggle is a part of life. So must all hearts be broken?"

8.
(I previously posted this quote on my post "embrace the messy bits")
"People get lost when they think of happiness as a destination. We're always thinking that some day we'll be happy. We will get that car or that job or that person in our lives that will fix everything. But happiness is a mood. And it's a condition not a destination. It's like being tired or hungry. It's not permanent. It comes and goes and that's okay. And I feel like if people thought of it that way, they'd find happiness more often."

9.
"Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swaps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it's yours."

10.
"Oliver Wendell Holmes once said: Many people die with their music still in them. Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it...time runs out."

11.
"Most of our lives are a series of images. They pass us by like towns on a highway. But sometimes a moment stuns us as it happens. And we know that this instant is more than a fleeting image. We know that this moment, every part of it, will live on forever.

12.
"You ever look at a picture of yourself and see a stranger in the background? It makes you wonder how many strangers have pictures of you. How many moments of other people's lives have we been in? Were we a part of someone's life when their dream came true? Or were we there when their dreams died? Did we keep trying to get in, as if we were somehow destined to be there? Or did the shock take us by surprise? Just think, you'd be a big part of someone else's life... and not even know it."

13.
"My mama told me that sometimes people have to cry out all their tears to make room for a heart full of smiles."

14.
"It's hard when you miss people. But, you know, if you miss them it means you were lucky. It means you had someone special in your life, someone worth missing."

15.
"It's been fifty years, fifty long years since I've done this. Looking back on what I said all those years ago, all the hopes and dreams I had, I've come to the conclusion that if having things turn out the way you wanted them to is a measure of a successful life, then some would say I'm a failure. The important thing is not to be bitter over life's disappointments. Learn to let go of the past. And recognize that every day won't be sunny, and when you find yourself lost in the darkness and despair, remember it's only in the black of night you see the stars. And those stars will lead you back home. So don't be afraid to make mistakes, to stumble and fall, cause most of the time, the greatest rewards come from doing the things that scare you the most. Maybe you'll get everything you wish for. Maybe you'll get more than you ever could have imagined. Who knows where life will take you. The road is long and in the end, the journey is the destination."

new year, new lessons, new beginnings

Thursday, January 2, 2014

When I look back at 2013, I realize just how far I've come this past year. A new school, a new apartment, new friends (while still keeping the old ones of course) - so many changes in my life that have reminded me of the life I want, as well as the kind of life I don't want. I didn't make any New Year's resolutions this year, aside from making it a point to live a life that I'm both happy and proud of. Almost six months ago I started this blog. At the time, even I didn't know if it would be a short lived phase, or something that I would continue for years to come. I can now confidently say that I know it's the latter. Even if I go weeks without writing, this blog has been my escape from the outside world. It's taught me about myself, my likes and interests, and what's on my mind even when I can't seem to figure it out for myself. It's helped me figure out what I want to do. It's helped me continue to dream. For everyone who has been reading and following - I'm so thankful for your support and overjoyed to have brought even the slightest bit of happiness into your days. I've learned a lot this year, but here are a few highlights I thought I'd share with the world:

I've learned that it's important to take risks and make mistakes. If things don't turn out the way you want them to, know that if nothing else, there is always a lesson to be learned from negative experiences.

I've learned that all it takes to be the best version of myself is focus, passion and a clear conscience (an extra shot of espresso in my Starbucks doesn't hurt either.)

I've learned that the more people you meet, the more you grow and the more you learn about the world. You can learn something from every person you cross paths with. Never pass up an opportunity to get to know someone new.
I've learned that as much as I like going out, nothing beats a night in with good friends, good food, and good conversation.

I've learned to stand my ground when necessary and stand up for what I believe in.

I've learned that there are people who will let you down...

I've also learned that there are twice as many people willing to pick you back up.

I've learned to be happy with the little things, but to never stop believing in the big things.

I've learned that cuddling is the best medicine out there.

I've learned that it's ok not to know where you're going next.

I've learned that I am so, incredibly lucky to be living the life that I do. And to everyone who has contributed to it in any way, I sincerely thank you.

I'll leave you with a sweet, little song from one of my favourite shows, Nashville, that will hopefully make you reflect on your own life and how good you have it.

Sitting here tonight, by the fire light

It reminds me I already have more than I should.
I don't need fame, no one to know my name.
At the end of the day, Lord I pray
I have a life that's good.

Two arms around me
Heaven to ground me
and a family that always calls me home.
Four wheels to get there.
Enough love to share and a
sweet, sweet, sweet song.
At the end of the day, Lord I pray
I have a life that's good.

Sometimes I'm hard on me,
when dreams don't come easy
I wanna look back and say I did all that I could.

At the end of the day, Lord I pray
I have a life that's good.

With love,
