I have a book that I carry around with me that contains a mantra for every day of the year. Lately, every one I've read seems to possess the perfect words to carry around in my mind throughout that day. This morning I woke up feeling a little blue and immediately opened my book to today's date. "Sometimes the Road Gets Rough," the title stated. A better pick me up could not have come my way. As I read the passage that followed the mantra, one of my favourite quotes came to mind:
"I feel like people get lost when they think of happiness as a destination. We're always thinking that someday we’ll be happy. You know, we’ll get that car or that job or that person in our lives that’ll fix everything. But happiness is a mood, and it’s a condition, not a destination. It’s like being tired or hungry. It’s not permanent. It comes and goes, and that’s okay. And I feel like if people thought of it that way, they’d find happiness a lot more often."
Life can be rough, love can be tragic, but I think that's part of the appeal. I've always been drawn to people who are a little flawed around the edges, places with mysterious auras. Imperfections intrigue us, they challenge us, they make way for us to grow. If everything in life was smooth sailing where would the adventures be? We would no longer have those embarrassing stories to tell, situations where we can go back and laugh at ourselves for hours. If every chapter of our lives were the same, I think we would be pretty bored. We get so caught up with the notion of perfection or the end goal that we tend to forget that the journey it takes us to get there can be equally as satisfying. If you don't take advantage of life, then sooner or later, it's going to take advantage of you. Shutting down an emotion is like skipping a chapter in a book--we need to experience the whole story in order for things to make sense. So if you have to cry, then cry. If you have to scream, scream. Do what you feel, be who you are and don't let your emotions bring you down. Just being able to feel strongly about something is a gift. Embrace the messy bits and have faith that life always has a way of cleaning them up for us when the time is right.
With love,
Ciara <3
