yoga with a twist

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Over the past few weeks I've been taking the time to improve my yoga practice (and mentality!) Once you get in the habit it can be awfully addicting. My weekly goal has been to make it to the studio for at least three classes, but sometimes I practice at home as well. If you've never put on some relaxing music (think John Mayer or James Vincent McMorrow) and made your way through a series of poses in the comfort of your home then I suggest you give it a try. It can also be fun to practice more advanced poses while watching tv (although that's usually just me looking for an excuse to call my Kardashian marathons productive). Irregardless, there ARE alternatives to practicing yoga in a studio if you either can't make the time or are just too lazy to leave your house. Below are a couple songs I like to put on while I practice at home. I'm working on creating the perfect yoga mix (or a few for that matter) so you can expect a whole playlist coming in the future!

The other day I tracked down the website of a yoga teacher I really like from my hometown. Towards the end of August I'll be heading back west for a little visit, so I wanted to see if she would be in town teaching. While scrolling through her class schedule I noticed a picture with the heading "SUP yoga". Sup yoga? "What on earth is that?" I thought to myself. If you're a yogi asking yourself the same question, then I am about to blow your mind. It turns out the 'SUP' stands for stand up paddle boarding, so essentially SUP yoga consists of paddle boarding out onto the water and then practicing a series of poses on the boards. Not only do you get an amazing view during your practice, but you also have the opportunity to challenge yourself with poses you thought you had already mastered. With a bit of help from Google I discovered that there are classes like this popping up all over the place, including Toronto! There's a company near the Beaches that teaches SUP Yoga almost every day. I do have a yoga pass so I might wait until I use it up before I challenge myself to some yoga on the water, but as soon as I do I promise you I will most certainly be giving this a shot. And to think--I thought yoga-lates was a revelation!

If you've tried SUP Yoga, or any other yoga mix I would love to hear about your experience. You can bet that I'll be documenting mine as soon as it occurs!

With love,
